Youth Circus Theatre

Circus is not just what you see in a tent with elephants, loud primary colors, and acrobats bouncing along the floor. It can be so much more! It has the effect of theatre, the precision and beauty of dance, and the rhythm of music. It can be a vehicle for telling stories.

While we have provided many camps and institutions across the country general circus workshops, over the last few years we have been developing and honing a circus theatre program where we use the vehicle of circus arts within the structure of a play. Young actors will spend time learning circus arts and incorporate them into a show as part of the story telling. For example, at the Burning Coal Theatre Company Summer Theatre Conservatory we have done “The Tempest” “Spoon River Anthology” and “Cats.”

Check out photos from numerous youth theatre circus performances we’ve directed! We have worked with actors of all different abilities and experience levels, and love circus as not just a vehicle for great storytelling, but as a vehicle to encourage collaboration, teamwork, and perserverence.

Throughout the summer we send teaching artists to camps ranging from 1 day, to the entire summer. In all of our programs, students will be able to try a range of circus skills, including: Juggling, spinning plates, clowning, flower sticks, human pyramids, partner acrobatics, tightwire, aerial arts and more.
